OverviewOpen ↗
Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is the capital of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, it is one of India's largest and most prominent metropolitan cities. Widely regarded as the "Gateway to South India," Chennai is deeply rooted in ancient Tamil culture, seamlessly blending its rich traditions with the rapid modernization of a 21st-century economic powerhouse.
The city matters immensely on the global stage as a primary hub for automobile manufacturing, often earning it the moniker "Detroit of India." Furthermore, it is celebrated as the "Healthcare Capital of India," drawing medical tourists from across the globe due to its advanced, world-class medical facilities and skilled professionals. From an artistic perspective, Chennai is the spiritual home of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam dance, hosting the celebrated Madras Music Season every December.
Among its many interesting facets, Chennai is home to Marina Beach—the second longest urban beach in the world. It also boasts the oldest municipal corporation in India (established in 1688) and features a cinematic industry, colloquially known as Kollywood, that produces some of the most widely watched films in the country. Warm, unpretentious, and culturally resilient, Chennai offers a uniquely grounded metropolitan experience.
HistoryOpen ↗
Chennai's history stretches back far beyond its colonial founding. Long before the arrival of Europeans, the region surrounding present-day Chennai was ruled successively by the Pallava, Chola, Pandya, and Vijayanagara empires. Ancient neighborhoods like Mylapore and Triplicane have histories dating back over a millennium, featuring temples that were mentioned in classical Tamil literature.
The modern city traces its origins to August 22, 1639, when the British East India Company, led by Francis Day and Andrew Cogan, purchased a small strip of land on the Coromandel Coast from the local Nayak rulers. Here, they built Fort St. George, the first major English settlement in India, which anchored the rapid growth of the town then known as Madraspatnam.
Throughout the 18th century, Madras was a key focal point in the Carnatic Wars, surviving a brief period of French occupation (1746–1749) before being restored to the British. By the 19th century, Madras had become the capital of the expansive Madras Presidency, emerging as a major naval base, administrative center, and railway hub.
Following India's independence in 1947, Madras became the capital of the newly formed Madras State, later renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969. In 1996, the city's name was officially changed from Madras to Chennai, reflecting its indigenous roots. In modern times, the city has weathered significant natural challenges, most notably the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the severe 2015 floods, showcasing the remarkable resilience and solidarity of its people.
GeographyOpen ↗
Chennai is situated on the southeastern coast of India, in the northeastern corner of Tamil Nadu. It lies on a flat coastal plain known as the Eastern Coastal Plains. The city is bisected by three primary water bodies: the Kosasthalaiyar River to the north, the Cooum River in the central region, and the Adyar River to the south. The historic Buckingham Canal, built during the British era, runs parallel to the coast, linking these rivers.
The city's eastern boundary is defined by the Bay of Bengal, featuring an extensive, sandy coastline. Inland, the geography comprises a mix of estuarine ecosystems, wetlands (such as the Pallikaranai marsh), and several lakes that act as crucial water catchments.
Notably, Chennai is one of the few global cities to house a national park within its metropolitan limits—the Guindy National Park, a scrub forest that serves as a vital green lung for the city and provides sanctuary to spotted deer, blackbucks, and various bird species.
TopographyOpen ↗
Chennai features remarkably flat topography, typical of coastal plains, with an average elevation of just 6.7 meters (22 feet) above sea level.
* Highest Point: St. Thomas Mount, a small hillock rising to about 91 meters (300 feet), and the Pallavaram hills in the southwest. * Lowest Point: Sea level along the Bay of Bengal coastline. * Coastal Areas: Characterized by expansive, flat sandy beaches, most notably Marina Beach and Elliot's Beach. * Flood Plains: Much of the city is built on the historical flood plains of the Adyar and Cooum rivers, rendering certain low-lying areas highly susceptible to inundation during heavy monsoons.
Weather & climateOpen ↗
Chennai features a Tropical Wet and Dry climate (Köppen: Aw), characterized by high temperatures and significant humidity year-round. Because it lies on the thermal equator and on the coast, extreme variations in seasonal temperatures are rare.
* Temperatures: Summers (May-June) are scorching, with average highs frequently exceeding 38°C (100°F). Winters (December-February) are mild and pleasant, with highs around 30°C (86°F) and lows around 22°C (72°F). * Rainfall: Unlike most of India, Chennai receives the bulk of its rainfall from the Northeast Monsoon (October to December), averaging about 1,400 mm (55 inches) annually. * Natural Disasters: The city is highly vulnerable to cyclonic storms forming in the Bay of Bengal between October and December. Urban flooding is a recurrent challenge during extreme rainfall events. * Best Time to Visit: November through February, when the weather is relatively cooler and less humid.
PopulationOpen ↗
Chennai is one of India's most populous cities. The 2011 national census recorded the city's population at 7.1 million, while recent estimates place the greater metropolitan population well over 11 million.
The demographic makeup is predominantly Tamil, though the city is a melting pot that hosts significant Telugu, Malayali, and Hindi-speaking communities, as well as an active expatriate population tied to the automotive and IT sectors.
Hinduism is the majority religion, followed by sizable communities of Muslims and Christians, alongside Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. Chennai boasts a high literacy rate, exceeding 90%, which translates to a highly skilled, educated workforce. The gender ratio in Chennai is relatively balanced compared to other major Indian metropolises, and the city has seen steady population growth driven primarily by domestic migration for education and employment.
GovernmentOpen ↗
The civic administration of the city is handled by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). Established in 1688, it is the oldest municipal institution in India and the second oldest in the world after London. The GCC is headed by a Mayor, who presides over a council of elected councilors representing the city's various wards (currently 200 wards divided across 15 zones).
As the capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai is the seat of the state government. Fort St. George houses the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and the Secretariat. The city's law and order are managed by the Greater Chennai Police, an agency headed by a Police Commissioner.
Politically, Chennai is divided into several parliamentary constituencies that elect representatives to the Lok Sabha (national parliament) and multiple legislative assembly constituencies for the state government.

While the cost of living is rising, Chennai remains relatively more affordable than Mumbai or New Delhi.
