Anadromous fish famed for its epic upstream migrations

Salmon are anadromous fish that migrate from the ocean to freshwater rivers to spawn. They belong to two genera (Oncorhynchus in the Pacific and Salmo in the Atlantic) and are economically and ecologically significant throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

Overview

Salmon are iconic fish species found in the Northern Hemisphere, primarily in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and their associated river systems. The genus Oncorhynchus includes Pacific salmon species such as Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum salmon, while Salmo includes Atlantic salmon. These fish are best known for their remarkable anadromous life cycle, spending part of their lives in freshwater and part in saltwater. Salmon undergo dramatic physiological changes as they transition between freshwater and marine environments, a process called smoltification. In the ocean, they feed voraciously and grow rapidly, traveling thousands of miles across ocean basins. When mature, they return with extraordinary precision to their natal streams to reproduce, using a combination of magnetic field detection, olfactory cues, and other navigational mechanisms. Salmon play crucial ecological roles as keystone species, transferring marine-derived nutrients to freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. Their spawning runs provide food for bears, eagles, and numerous other predators. Commercially, salmon support major fisheries and aquaculture industries worldwide, though many wild populations face threats from habitat loss, overfishing, climate change, and competition from hatchery fish. The various species range in size and appearance, but most exhibit counter-shading (dark backs, silver sides) when in the ocean, developing distinctive breeding coloration as they return to freshwater. Pacific salmon die after spawning (semelparous), while Atlantic salmon may survive to spawn multiple times (iteroparous).

How to identify

Adult salmon in ocean phase typically have streamlined, torpedo-shaped bodies with silvery sides and dark blue-green backs. Size varies by species: Pink salmon are smallest (1.8-2.7 kg), while Chinook can exceed 45 kg. During spawning migration, fish develop dramatic changes including hooked jaws (kype in males), humped backs (especially Pink salmon), and vibrant coloration—reds, greens, and browns depending on species. Atlantic salmon retain more silvery appearance with black X-shaped spots. All salmon have adipose fins between dorsal fin and tail. Ocean-phase fish have small, uniform scales and deeply forked tails.

Habitat

Salmon require both freshwater and marine habitats. Spawning and early rearing occur in cold, clean, well-oxygenated streams and rivers with gravel substrates. Juveniles may spend months to years in freshwater before migrating to the ocean. Marine phase occurs in coastal and open ocean waters of the North Pacific and North Atlantic, typically at temperatures between 5-15°C. Successful habitats require unobstructed migration routes, appropriate water temperatures, sufficient streamflow, and intact riparian vegetation.

Distribution

Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus) range throughout the North Pacific Ocean from California to Alaska and across to Russia, Japan, and Korea. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) historically ranged from Long Island Sound north to Ungava Bay in North America, and from Connecticut to the Arctic Circle in Europe. Some species have been introduced to the Great Lakes and southern hemisphere locations including Chile, New Zealand, and Australia. Native populations have been extirpated from much of their southern range due to habitat degradation and dams.

Diet

Juvenile salmon in freshwater consume aquatic insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and small invertebrates. In the ocean, adult salmon are carnivorous predators feeding on a variety of prey including smaller fish (herring, anchovies, sardines, sand lance), krill, amphipods, squid, and other crustaceans. Diet composition varies by species, size, and ocean location. Salmon cease feeding once they enter freshwater for spawning migration, living off stored body fat.

Behavior

Salmon are strongly migratory, undertaking epic journeys between ocean feeding grounds and natal spawning streams. They demonstrate remarkable homing ability, returning to the exact stream reaches where they were born. During spawning migration, fish navigate upstream through rapids and obstacles, sometimes leaping waterfalls over 3 meters high. Females excavate nests (redds) in gravel by turning sideways and using tail movements. Males compete aggressively for spawning opportunities. Pacific salmon undergo senescence and die shortly after spawning, while Atlantic salmon may return to sea and spawn again.

Reproduction & life cycle

Salmon are semelparous (Pacific) or iteroparous (Atlantic). Spawning typically occurs in autumn or winter in gravel-bottomed streams. Females create redds by displacing gravel, deposit 2,000-10,000 eggs depending on species and size, which are fertilized by attending males. Eggs incubate in gravel for weeks to months depending on water temperature. Alevin emerge with yolk sacs attached, then become free-swimming fry. Parr remain in freshwater for periods ranging from weeks (Pink salmon) to 2-3 years (Coho, Chinook) before smoltification and ocean migration. Ocean residence ranges from 1-7 years before spawning migration.

When to look

Spawning runs occur species-specifically from June through January, varying by location and species. Spring/summer: smolt migration to ocean. Summer/fall: most species return to spawn. Best viewing of spawning migrations typically September-November in most regions. Ocean fishing seasons vary by jurisdiction and species.

Cultural significance

Salmon hold profound cultural and spiritual significance for Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest and Northeast Atlantic, central to traditional diets, ceremonies, and worldviews. They appear prominently in Coast Salish, Tlingit, Haida, and other Indigenous art and mythology. Commercially, salmon support multi-billion dollar fishing and aquaculture industries. Recreational salmon fishing is popular worldwide. Salmon are symbols of perseverance and transformation in many cultures. They have been subjects of scientific research on navigation, physiology, and conservation biology.
