The coast redwood is an iconic evergreen conifer renowned for being the tallest living tree species on Earth. Their towering trunks, covered in thick, fibrous, reddish-brown bark, can reach diameters of 7 meters or more at the base. Redwoods are remarkably well-adapted to their foggy coastal environment, where they absorb moisture directly from fog through their needles, supplementing rainfall during California's dry summers. The bark can be up to 30 centimeters thick, providing exceptional fire resistance and insulation. These trees grow in pure stands or mixed forests, often creating complex ecosystems that support diverse flora and fauna. Historically, coast redwoods covered approximately 2 million acres along the Pacific Coast, but extensive logging during the 19th and 20th centuries reduced old-growth forests to less than 5% of their original extent. Today, remaining ancient groves are protected in parks like Redwood National and State Parks, while second-growth forests continue to mature. Redwoods exhibit exceptional regenerative abilities, sprouting from stumps and roots after disturbance. The redwood forest ecosystem is one of the most productive on Earth, storing more biomass per hectare than any other forest type. How to identify
Coast redwoods are identified by their immense height (often the tallest trees in any stand), straight columnar trunks, and thick, deeply furrowed reddish-brown to cinnamon-red bark that is soft and fibrous. The evergreen foliage consists of flat, linear needles arranged in two rows along the stem, typically 1.5-2.5 cm long, dark green above with two white stomatal bands beneath. The overall crown is conical to irregular, often with a distinctive narrow, pointed top in younger trees. Small, oval cones are only 1.5-3 cm long, much smaller than those of giant sequoias. The massive trunk diameter and buttressed base are distinctive features in mature specimens.
Habitat
Coast redwoods occupy a narrow fog belt along the Pacific Coast, requiring cool, humid conditions with frequent summer fog. They thrive in deep, well-drained alluvial soils in valleys and on lower slopes, often along streams and rivers. The species requires mild temperatures year-round, with moderate rainfall (typically 640-3,550 mm annually) and critically depends on fog drip for moisture during dry summer months. They grow from sea level to about 900 meters elevation, primarily in areas where marine influence moderates temperature extremes.
Distribution
Endemic to a narrow coastal strip extending approximately 750 km from southwestern Oregon (Curry County) south through coastal California to southern Monterey County. The natural range is restricted to within 47 km of the Pacific Ocean, rarely extending more than 80 km inland. The greatest concentrations of old-growth redwoods occur in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties in northwestern California.
Diet
Coast redwoods require deep, well-drained, acidic to neutral soils rich in organic matter, though they can tolerate some variation in soil types. They are adapted to partial shade when young but require full sun as mature trees. A critical requirement is access to summer moisture through fog interception, which can contribute 10-40% of annual water input. The species benefits from nitrogen-fixing plants in the understory and mycorrhizal associations that enhance nutrient uptake from the soil.
Behavior
Redwoods exhibit remarkable growth rates, capable of adding 60 cm or more in height per year under optimal conditions. They demonstrate unique fog-harvesting behavior, with needles condensing fog into water droplets that drip to the ground and are absorbed by shallow lateral roots extending up to 30 meters from the trunk. The species shows exceptional sprouting ability, regenerating from burls, stumps, and roots after fire, logging, or other disturbance. Mature trees develop complex aerial root systems and canopy soils that support entire epiphytic communities high above the forest floor.
Reproduction & life cycle
Coast redwoods reproduce both sexually through seed and asexually through vegetative sprouting. Trees produce small cones that mature in one season, containing 3-7 seeds per cone, which are dispersed by wind and gravity. Sexual reproduction typically begins at 10-15 years of age. However, most regeneration occurs through clonal sprouting from root crowns and burls, particularly after disturbance. Sprouting can occur from stumps of trees over 1,000 years old. Seeds germinate best on bare mineral soil or decaying logs. Trees can live over 2,000 years, with some individuals estimated at 2,500+ years old.
When to look
Redwoods are evergreen and can be observed year-round. New growth appears in spring (April-June) as bright green shoot tips. Pollen cones release pollen in winter (December-February), while seed cones mature in late summer to fall (August-October). The trees are most dramatic to visit during foggy summer months (June-September) when their fog-harvesting adaptations are most visible, or after winter rains when understory plants are lush.
Cultural significance
Coast redwoods hold profound cultural significance for indigenous peoples including the Yurok, Tolowa, and other tribes who traditionally used the wood for canoes, houses, and ceremonial purposes. The redwood's fire-resistant wood made it invaluable for construction, leading to massive commercial logging from the 1850s onward. These trees became symbols of American conservation efforts, inspiring the creation of early state and national parks. Redwoods are California icons, with the species protected as California's official state tree. The wood is prized for outdoor construction, decking, and furniture due to its natural decay resistance. Modern conservation efforts focus on protecting remaining old-growth stands and preserving the ecological and carbon-storage values of these forests.
