Overview

Washington is a Pacific Northwest state in the far northwestern United States, bordered by the Pacific Ocean, Oregon, Idaho, and the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is one of the country’s most geographically varied states, with rainforests, rugged Pacific coastline, fertile river valleys, dry interior plateaus, volcanic peaks, and major metropolitan centers all within a relatively compact area.

The state is especially well known for Seattle’s global influence in technology, aerospace, music, and trade; for Puget Sound’s maritime economy; and for the Columbia Basin’s highly productive agriculture. Washington is home to some of the most recognizable companies in the United States, including major employers in software, online retail, aviation, and global logistics. It is also one of the nation’s leading producers of apples, hops, cherries, and wine.

Culturally, Washington has deep Indigenous roots and remains home to many federally recognized tribes. Its modern identity combines Native history, Asian and European immigration, timber and fishing traditions, military presence, university research, and a strong outdoor culture shaped by mountains, forests, and water.

Washington matters nationally and internationally because of its trade links to Asia-Pacific markets, major seaports, innovation economy, clean hydropower resources, and strategic location along the U.S.-Canada border. It is frequently seen as both an economic gateway and an environmental bellwether for the American West.
