Seattle is located in western Washington on a narrow land corridor between saltwater Puget Sound to the west and freshwater Lake Washington to the east. This setting gives the city an unusual combination of urban density, shoreline access, and views of major mountain systems. Elliott Bay forms a prominent western waterfront, while the Lake Washington Ship Canal links Puget Sound to Lake Union and Lake Washington.
The city's terrain is varied rather than flat. Hills, ridges, bluffs, and former tidal areas shape neighborhood patterns and street grids. Well-known elevated areas include Queen Anne Hill, Capitol Hill, First Hill, Beacon Hill, and West Seattle's higher ground. Water is a defining geographic element: beyond Puget Sound and Lake Washington, the city contains Lake Union, Green Lake, the Duwamish Waterway, and numerous smaller creeks and shoreline habitats.
Seattle lies within a temperate marine environment. Forested landscapes once dominated the area, and remnants of native ecology remain in parks, ravines, shorelines, and wetlands. Trees such as Douglas fir, western red cedar, bigleaf maple, and hemlock are characteristic of the broader region, though urbanization has greatly altered the original ecosystem.
The region is geologically active, shaped by glaciation and situated within an area influenced by the Cascadia subduction zone. The city faces long-term earthquake risk, and nearby volcanic peaks such as Mount Rainier, though outside the city, are central to the region's geography and hazard awareness. Natural resources historically important to Seattle and the wider region include timber, fisheries, freshwater, deepwater port access, and hydropower generated elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest.
