The City of Kent operates under a Mayor-Council form of government. The Mayor serves as the chief executive officer, responsible for the day-to-day administration of city departments, managing the budget, and enforcing laws. The Mayor is elected at-large to a four-year term.
The legislative body is the Kent City Council, which consists of seven members who are also elected at-large to staggered four-year terms. The council is responsible for enacting ordinances, appropriating funds, and establishing public policy. The city provides a comprehensive suite of public services, including its own police department, municipal court, parks and recreation department, and public works. Fire protection and emergency medical services are provided by the Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority.
