Virginia’s infrastructure is highly developed to support its large population and business sectors. Electricity is primarily provided by Dominion Energy in the eastern and central parts of the state, and Appalachian Power in the west. The grid is transitioning toward renewable energy, spurred by the Virginia Clean Economy Act.
Water and sewer services are managed at the municipal and county levels, drawing heavily from the state's abundant rivers and reservoirs.
Telecommunications infrastructure is a major strength. Northern Virginia boasts some of the most robust fiber-optic and broadband infrastructure in the world to support its data center alley. While urban areas enjoy high-speed connectivity, the state government has active, funded initiatives underway to close the digital divide and bring reliable broadband to rural counties in the Southside and Southwest.
