The topography of the Museum District is characteristic of the Richmond Piedmont area. It consists of a relatively flat, highly developed urban landscape with very gentle, rolling gradations. Because it sits slightly above the James River fall line to the south, the area is generally not prone to the flooding that affects some of Richmond's lower-elevation, river-adjacent neighborhoods.
