The topography of Flower Mound is gently rolling, a hallmark of the North Texas Cross Timbers region, heavily wooded in many areas and marked by small creeks and ravines. The town's highest elevations are generally in its western sections, while the southern boundary steps down toward the floodplains and shoreline of Grapevine Lake.
The most notable topographical feature is 'The Mound' itself. Located near the intersection of FM 3040 and FM 2499, this 12.5-acre hill rises approximately 50 feet above the surrounding plain. It is a rare, unplowed patch of native tallgrass prairie. Because it was never farmed, it has retained a unique micro-ecosystem, producing a staggering variety of native wildflowers that bloom throughout the spring and early summer.
