Economy

Oregon has a diversified economy combining natural-resource industries, advanced manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, higher education, tourism, and trade. It is one of the leading economies in the Pacific Northwest and benefits from access to West Coast shipping routes, a highly productive agricultural valley, and a concentration of technology and semiconductor activity in the Portland metropolitan area.

Gross state product is substantial by U.S. state standards, though exact current-year figures vary by source and release date. The economy is often discussed through a few major pillars:

- **Technology and advanced manufacturing**, especially semiconductors and electronics in the Portland-Hillsboro area - **Forest products and wood manufacturing** - **Agriculture and food processing** - **Healthcare and education** - **Outdoor recreation and tourism** - **Sportswear and design**, with globally known firms in the state

Major employers include large healthcare systems, school districts and universities, state and local governments, semiconductor manufacturers, athletic and outdoor apparel companies, and distribution/logistics firms. Intel has long been one of the best-known major private employers in Oregon, especially in Washington County, while Nike's global headquarters in Beaverton gives the state an unusually visible role in sportswear and branding.

Economic strengths include access to ports and rail, a skilled workforce in several metro areas, high-quality farmland, renewable energy potential, and a strong quality-of-life reputation that has attracted migrants and entrepreneurs. Challenges include housing affordability, periodic downturns in timber or manufacturing, rural economic disparities, wildfire impacts, and the uneven geography of opportunity between larger metro areas and remote counties.

Cost of living varies considerably. Portland and Bend are generally more expensive than many rural parts of the state, especially in housing. Income levels also vary widely by region, with higher wages concentrated in technology, healthcare, and management occupations.

Future development is likely to focus on housing supply, climate resilience, semiconductor and clean-energy investment, transportation upgrades, workforce training, and adaptation to changing patterns in forestry, agriculture, and water availability.
