Overview

Portland is Oregon's largest city and the principal urban center of the state's economy, culture, media, and transportation networks. Located near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, it developed as a port and trade center and later became nationally known for urban planning, bridges, environmental politics, coffee roasting, craft beer, food culture, bookselling, and neighborhood-scale commercial districts. It is the core city of the Portland metropolitan area, which extends into southwest Washington.

The city is widely recognized for its relationship to landscape. Forest Park lies within city limits, Mount Hood is visible on clear days, and the Pacific Coast, Columbia River Gorge, and Cascade Range are all accessible from the city. Portland is also notable for preserving a strong downtown transit network, an extensive park system, and mixed-use neighborhoods that developed around streetcar corridors.

Culturally, Portland has an outsized profile relative to its size. It has been associated with independent music, design, cycling, progressive politics, and a strong do-it-yourself ethos. At the same time, the city has faced the same pressures affecting many American urban centers: housing affordability, homelessness, public safety debates, racial inequities rooted in earlier planning decisions, and the challenge of maintaining livability while growing.

Interesting local identifiers include its many bridges over the Willamette River, the long-running Portland Rose Festival, Powell's City of Books, and sports traditions centered on the Portland Trail Blazers and Portland Timbers. The city's public image often emphasizes creativity and informality, but its underlying importance comes from its role as a regional logistics hub, employer center, and service capital for much of Oregon.
