Portland is in northwestern Oregon near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. The city sits within the broad Willamette Valley but is also shaped by nearby volcanic and tectonic landscapes associated with the Cascade Range and the Columbia River Gorge. Its position has made it a natural gateway between inland Oregon, the Pacific coast, and the Pacific Northwest's interstate trade corridors.
The city's terrain is varied. Downtown and several older industrial areas lie on relatively low ground along the Willamette River, while much of southwest, northwest, and east Portland rises into hills, terraces, and extinct volcanic landforms. The Tualatin Mountains, commonly called the West Hills, form a prominent ridge west of downtown. On the east side, volcanic cinder cones and buttes such as Mount Tabor, Rocky Butte, and Powell Butte create notable local relief.
Portland contains extensive urban forest and parkland. Forest Park, one of the largest urban forests in the United States, stretches along the hills west of downtown. The city also includes riverfront habitat, wetlands, neighborhood parks, and remnant oak and conifer ecosystems. Regional natural resources historically included timber, river access, fertile nearby agricultural land, and hydroelectric power generated elsewhere in the Columbia basin.
Geologically, the area reflects lava flows, Missoula Flood deposits, river sedimentation, and uplifted hills. The catastrophic Ice Age floods that swept through the Columbia basin left major deposits across the Portland area, helping shape its soils and topography. The city is also in an earthquake-prone region influenced by the Cascadia Subduction Zone and local crustal faults, even though major earthquakes are infrequent in day-to-day life.
Portland's climate is generally mild and moist, with wet winters and dry summers, typical of the Pacific Northwest lowlands west of the Cascades.
