Historically, Edmond's early economy was largely agrarian, relying on wheat, cotton, and livestock. Today, the city is overwhelmingly suburban and commercial, and large-scale agriculture within the city limits is virtually nonexistent.
However, in the less developed outskirts and unincorporated areas of northern and eastern Oklahoma County surrounding Edmond, agriculture remains relevant. These areas feature cattle ranching, hay production, and extensive equestrian facilities. Within the city, agricultural engagement is mostly localized to community gardens and the popular Edmond Farmers Market, which connects residents with local growers, bakers, and artisans from across central Oklahoma.
