Agriculture is one of Ohio's largest industries, contributing significantly to both the state and national economy. Approximately half of Ohio's total land area is dedicated to farming. The state frequently ranks in the top ten nationally for the production of soybeans and field corn, which thrive in the fertile, glaciated soils of the state's western half.
Livestock also plays a vital role. Ohio is a leading producer of hogs and poultry, and features a highly robust dairy industry. Notably, Ohio is the number one producer of Swiss cheese in the United States.
Beyond traditional large-scale farming, Ohio has a diverse agricultural ecosystem. The state boasts a massive nursery and greenhouse industry, a growing organic farming sector, and vibrant agritourism, including apple orchards, wineries in the Lake Erie region, and community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs driven by its large Amish farming communities.
