Michigan has a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. The southern half of the Lower Peninsula experiences hot, humid summers and cold winters (Köppen Dfa), while the northern Lower Peninsula and the entire Upper Peninsula see shorter, cooler summers and severe, snowy winters (Köppen Dfb).
Temperatures average from the mid-80s °F (29 °C) in southern July to well below freezing in northern January. Precipitation is generally well-distributed throughout the year.
The presence of the Great Lakes creates a distinct phenomenon known as "lake-effect snow." Areas along the western coast of the Lower Peninsula and the northern coast of the Upper Peninsula receive massive snow accumulations, sometimes exceeding 150 inches annually. The best time to visit depends on the desired activity: summer (June-August) for lake recreation, and autumn (September-October) for stunning fall foliage.
