Sister cities

While "sister city" designations traditionally apply to municipalities (e.g., Detroit is sister cities with Turin, Italy, and Toyota City, Japan), the State of Michigan maintains official "Sister State" and friendly relationships at the provincial/prefecture level to promote cultural and economic exchange:

* **Shiga Prefecture, Japan:** Established in 1968, this is one of Michigan's oldest and most active sister-state relationships, focusing on shared environmental stewardship of major lakes (Lake Biwa in Shiga and the Great Lakes in Michigan). * **Sichuan Province, China:** Established in 1982, focusing on economic, educational, and cultural exchange.
