The City of Wheaton operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council consists of a Mayor and six City Council members. Four of the council members are elected from distinct voting districts, while the remaining two and the Mayor are elected at-large. The council sets policy, while an appointed City Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of municipal departments.
As the county seat of DuPage County, Wheaton hosts the sprawling DuPage County Government complex on its western edge. This complex includes the county courthouse, the county jail, and various administrative offices, making government a highly visible part of the local landscape.
Public services are exceptionally well-maintained. The Wheaton Police and Fire Departments provide emergency services, while the nationally recognized Wheaton Park District manages over 800 acres of parkland, community centers, and recreational facilities.
