Wheaton is located in northeastern Illinois within the fertile Great Lakes Plains. Geographically, it sits centrally within DuPage County, sharing borders with Glen Ellyn to the east, Winfield to the west, Carol Stream to the north, and Naperville and Lisle to the south.
The local geography is defined by suburban landscapes interwoven with natural wetland ecosystems and dense forest preserves. Major green spaces within or immediately adjacent to the city include the Lincoln Marsh Natural Area and the sprawling Herrick Lake Forest Preserve. The city is primarily drained by small creeks and tributaries that eventually flow into the DuPage River.
