Historically, Naperville was a thriving agricultural community, known for its production of grain, oats, corn, and dairy products. The establishment of local breweries and gristmills in the 19th century was directly tied to the surrounding farming economy.
Today, large-scale commercial agriculture within the city limits has virtually vanished, replaced by suburban housing and commercial development. However, the agricultural heritage is preserved through community initiatives. The city hosts popular farmers' markets, bringing fresh produce from surrounding rural counties (such as Kane, Kendall, and outer Will counties) to local residents. Additionally, several community garden plots are maintained by the park district, allowing residents to engage in small-scale, organic gardening.
