History

Before European settlement, the broader region that includes present-day Union City was part of the homelands of Indigenous peoples of the Southeast, especially the Creek (Muscogee) and, in parts of north Georgia more broadly, Cherokee communities. Like much of Georgia, the area was transformed in the 19th century through land cessions, forced removal, and expanding settler agriculture.

The community that became Union City developed in the railroad era, when transportation links shaped settlement patterns across Georgia. The town was historically associated with rail access and agricultural trade in south Fulton County. It was incorporated in 1908, during a period when many Georgia towns formalized local government structures to support trade, roads, schools, and public services.

In the early and mid-20th century, Union City functioned largely as a small town serving surrounding rural and semi-rural areas. Agriculture and local commerce were important to the local economy, while proximity to Atlanta gradually increased the city’s regional relevance. As road systems improved and automobile travel expanded, Union City became more tightly integrated into the metro area.

Late 20th-century suburban growth changed the city significantly. Expansion of Atlanta’s southern suburbs, the influence of Hartsfield-Jackson airport, and development along Interstate 85 encouraged residential subdivisions, warehouses, retail activity, and service-sector employment. In the 21st century, Union City has continued to evolve as a diverse suburban city shaped by metropolitan growth, regional mobility, and redevelopment efforts.
