Saratoga features a diverse topography that rises significantly from east to west. The eastern portions of the city lie on the relatively flat alluvial plains of the Santa Clara Valley at elevations of around 150 to 250 feet above sea level.
Moving westward, the terrain transitions sharply into rolling hills and steep canyons, eventually climbing into the Santa Cruz Mountains. The highest points within the western city limits exceed 2,000 feet in elevation. The area is heavily marked by the deeply incised canyon of Saratoga Creek, which flows out of the mountains, creating distinct ridgelines and hillside plateaus where many of the city's larger estates are built.
