Rivers, lakes & waterways

Water is a central feature of Taiwan's geography, from inland alpine lakes to dramatic coastlines.

* **Lakes:** **Sun Moon Lake** in Nantou County is the largest body of water in Taiwan and a premier tourist destination, famous for its beauty, indigenous Thao culture, and surrounding cycling paths. * **Rivers:** The **Zhuoshui River** is the longest river, flowing westward through the central plains. The **Tamsui River** is vital to the Taipei basin, featuring popular riverside parks and wharves. * **Waterfalls:** **Shifen Waterfall** (often called the "Niagara of Taiwan") and **Wulai Waterfall** are prominent, accessible cascades in the north. * **Coastlines & Beaches:** The East Coast features dramatic rocky drop-offs into the Pacific Ocean, while the West Coast has extensive wetlands and tidal flats. Notable beaches include Baishawan in the north and the tropical white-sand beaches of Kenting.
