Housing

Taiwan's housing market is characterized by a very high homeownership rate (historically around 80%), though affordability is a pressing social issue for younger generations. In Taipei and New Taipei City, the price-to-income ratio is among the highest in the world.

Urban housing predominantly consists of high-rise apartment and condominium complexes, ranging from luxury luxury towers with full amenities to older, five-story walk-up apartments (often referred to as *gongyu*). Single-family homes are rare in metropolitan areas but can be found in more rural or southern counties.

To address affordability, the government has recently expanded social housing initiatives and rent subsidy programs, though demand still vastly outpaces supply in northern economic hubs.
