Given its status as a densely populated, highly developed urban center, traditional agriculture within the city limits of Colombo is virtually non-existent. The city relies entirely on domestic supply chains from the rural provinces and international imports to feed its population.
However, in the broader Colombo District and the surrounding Western Province, peri-urban agriculture is present. This includes small-scale cultivation of vegetables, fruits, and floriculture. The region historically had large rubber and coconut estates, though many of these have been partitioned for suburban housing as the metropolitan area has expanded.
Fishing remains an active industry along the coast, with local fishermen operating out of small harbors and the Mutwal fishery harbor contributing to the city's vibrant seafood markets.
