Environment

The Museums district is located in Cinnamon Gardens, historically known for its cinnamon plantations and today recognized as Colombo's greenest urban space.

* **Air Quality:** Generally moderate, though vehicle emissions from nearby major arteries (like Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha) can elevate PM2.5 levels during rush hour. * **Green Spaces:** The district is directly adjacent to **Viharamahadevi Park** (formerly Victoria Park), Colombo's largest public park, which features ancient hardwood trees, a large Buddha statue, and water features. * **Flora and Fauna:** The museum grounds themselves are shaded by massive, centuries-old Banyan trees. Birdlife, bats, and small urban wildlife like palm squirrels are abundant. * **Sustainability:** The Department of National Museums and the CMC have been increasing efforts to reduce single-use plastics on the premises and improve energy efficiency in the older, colonial-era buildings.
