Economy

The localized economy of the Museums precinct is heavily driven by cultural tourism, education, and supporting services. It does not function as an industrial or traditional commercial hub.

The presence of the National Museum, alongside the nearby Natural History Museum and the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theater, generates steady ticketing and tourism revenue. The secondary economy consists of upscale cafes, boutique retail stores, and art galleries that cater to the affluent local demographic and international visitors. Cost of living and commercial real estate leasing in this specific area are among the highest in Sri Lanka.
