History

Spain's history is a complex tapestry of ancient civilizations, conquests, and cultural intermingling. The Iberian Peninsula was originally inhabited by Celts, Iberians, and Basques before being conquered by the Roman Empire, which established "Hispania" and deeply influenced the region's language, religion, and infrastructure. Following the fall of Rome, the Visigoths ruled until 711 AD, when North African Moors crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and established "Al-Andalus." For centuries, Islamic, Christian, and Jewish cultures coexisted, leaving behind magnificent architectural marvels like the Alhambra in Granada and the Mezquita in Córdoba.

The Christian "Reconquista" took nearly 800 years, culminating in 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, captured Granada. That same year, they sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyage, launching the Spanish Empire. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, Spain was a formidable global superpower, amassing vast territories across the Americas and the Philippines. This era, known as the Spanish Golden Age, saw an explosion of art and literature, though the empire eventually declined due to economic instability, continuous wars, and the gradual independence of its colonies in the 19th century.

The 20th century brought severe turbulence, most notably the devastating Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), which ended with the establishment of a nationalist dictatorship under General Francisco Franco. Franco's rule lasted until his death in 1975, after which King Juan Carlos I led a peaceful transition to democracy, resulting in the 1978 Constitution. Today, modern Spain is a progressive, democratic nation that joined the European Union in 1986 and has since experienced rapid economic and social modernization.
