The Community of Madrid is the economic engine of Spain, boasting the highest regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the country, often accounting for around 19% of the national total (approximately €230–€260 billion). It also has the highest GDP per capita in Spain.
The economy is overwhelmingly driven by the services sector, which accounts for more than 85% of its economic activity. Due to its status as the national capital, it attracts immense foreign direct investment and serves as the primary corporate headquarters for the vast majority of Spain's largest companies (including those on the IBEX 35 stock index).
While cost of living in the capital city is among the highest in the country, median incomes generally outpace the national average. Unemployment rates in the region are traditionally lower than the Spanish national average, though youth unemployment remains a notable challenge.
