Located in the heart of the North Caucasus, Ingushetia shares borders with North Ossetia-Alania to the west and north, Chechnya to the east, and the country of Georgia to the south. Geographically, the republic is divided into two distinct zones: the rolling, fertile plains and river valleys of the north, and the steep, rugged slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountain range in the south.
The landscape is shaped by a network of rivers, most notably the Terek and its major tributary, the Sunzha, as well as the fast-flowing Assa and Armkhi rivers that carve deep gorges through the mountains. These southern gorges are covered in dense deciduous and coniferous forests that give way to alpine meadows at higher altitudes. Natural resources include mineral springs, timber, and modest reserves of oil and natural gas.
