The history of the Utrecht region is deeply intertwined with the development of the Netherlands. During the Roman Empire, the Rhine river, which flows through the province, served as the northern border (*Limes Germanicus*). The Romans established several forts here around 47 AD, including *Castellum Traiectum*, which eventually evolved into the city of Utrecht.
In the Middle Ages, Utrecht was the undisputed religious and political center of the Northern Netherlands. The Prince-Bishopric of Utrecht controlled vast territories, and the city itself became a powerhouse of trade and religion.
