As of 2023, the municipality of Amsterdam has a population of approximately 921,000 residents, making it the most populous city in the Netherlands. The broader Amsterdam metropolitan area is home to around 2.5 million people.
Amsterdam is famously cosmopolitan and diverse, hosting over 170 different nationalities. While the majority of residents are ethnically Dutch, there are significant communities of Surinamese, Moroccan, Turkish, and Indonesian descent, along with a rapidly growing population of international expatriates drawn by the tech and corporate sectors.
The population is relatively young, buoyed by a large student body and young professionals. English is remarkably prevalent; an estimated 90% of Amsterdammers speak it fluently. The city is highly educated, with a large percentage of the workforce holding tertiary degrees. Historically Protestant, modern Amsterdam is highly secular, though Islam, Christianity, and Judaism are the most actively practiced religions.
