Population

Because the "Monuments" are integrated into the urban fabric of the Kathmandu Valley, their demographic profile reflects the broader metropolitan area, which is home to approximately 2.5 million people.

The historical guardians and creators of the valley's monuments are the Newar people, an indigenous community renowned for their rich heritage of art, commerce, and architecture. Today, the areas surrounding the monument zones are highly cosmopolitan, housing migrants from all over Nepal.

The population demonstrates a unique religious syncretism. Hinduism and Buddhism are the dominant faiths, and it is common for the local population to worship interchangeably at both Hindu and Buddhist monuments. The literacy rate in the urban centre is relatively high, and a significant portion of the local workforce is engaged in tourism, heritage conservation, and traditional crafts.
