Economy

Japan possesses a highly developed, free-market social economy that consistently ranks among the top four globally by nominal GDP. It is characterized by an incredibly high standard of living, advanced infrastructure, and a strong emphasis on research and development. The economy historically benefited from the *keiretsu* system—interlocking business networks of manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors—though this has modernized and relaxed in recent decades.

Major economic strengths include precision manufacturing, automotive engineering, consumer electronics, optics, and robotics. Japan's median household income remains competitive, though the country has faced periods of economic stagnation and deflationary pressure since the asset price bubble burst in the early 1990s (the "Lost Decades").

Looking toward the future, the Japanese economy is heavily focused on addressing its labor shortages through automation, artificial intelligence, and increasing the participation of women and foreign workers in the labor force. Furthermore, Tokyo remains one of the world's premier financial centers.
