Iran's history is characterized by the rise and fall of vast, influential empires. The region's organized civilization dates back to the Elamite kingdoms (c. 3200 BC). In the 6th century BC, Cyrus the Great founded the Achaemenid Empire, the first Persian empire and one of the largest the ancient world had ever seen, stretching from the Balkans to the Indus Valley. This era established a legacy of administrative brilliance and cultural tolerance.
Following its conquest by Alexander the Great, the region was subsequently ruled by the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire, the Parthians, and the Sasanians. The 7th-century Arab conquest brought Islam to Iran, profoundly shifting its cultural and religious landscape. However, Iranians maintained their distinct language and identity, contributing heavily to the Islamic Golden Age in science, art, and philosophy.
The Safavid dynasty (1501–1736) unified the country and established Twelver Shia Islam as the official religion, a decision that defines Iran's geopolitical and cultural identity to this day. Through the Qajar and Pahlavi dynasties of the 19th and 20th centuries, Iran navigated foreign imperialism, modernization, and social upheaval.
In 1979, a popular uprising led to the Iranian Revolution, overthrowing the Pahlavi monarchy and establishing the modern Islamic Republic under the leadership of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The subsequent decades have been shaped by the devastating Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988), complex relations with the West, international sanctions, and a dynamic internal struggle between tradition, reform, and economic development.
