Transportation

Tehran Province features the most extensive and developed transportation network in Iran. The region is served by two major airports: Mehrabad International Airport (handling domestic flights) and Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) (handling international flights), located about 30 km south of the capital.

The province is the nexus of Iran's railway and highway networks, connecting the capital to every corner of the country via major freeways like the Tehran-Karaj Freeway, Azadegan Expressway, and Hemmat Expressway.

Public transit is anchored by the Tehran Metro, one of the largest and busiest subway systems in the Middle East, which connects the city center to suburbs like Karaj (Alborz Province), Ray, and the international airport. This is supplemented by a massive Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network that crisscrosses the metropolitan area. Ride-sharing apps (like Snapp and Tapsi) and traditional shared taxis are ubiquitous. Despite this vast infrastructure, chronic traffic congestion remains one of the province's most pressing daily challenges.
