The city sits on a relatively flat and high-altitude plain, averaging an elevation of 1,590 meters (5,217 feet) above sea level. The topography is largely level within the city limits, allowing for sweeping, linear boulevards and expansive squares.
To the south, the city is bordered by Mount Soffeh, an isolated, prominent peak that rises approximately 2,257 meters above sea level and serves as a popular recreational area. The Zayandehrud carves an east-west channel through the city's center, defining its central flood plain and creating a green, fertile ribbon that sharply contrasts with the drier, flatter plateaus surrounding the broader metropolitan area.
