Fars Province covers a vast area of 122,608 square kilometers in southwestern Iran, making it one of the largest provinces in the country. The region's geography is dramatically shaped by the Zagros Mountains, which run from the northwest to the southeast. These rugged mountains divide the province into several distinct topographical and climatic zones.
The province contains several notable bodies of water, though many are seasonal or suffer from modern climate pressures. Major lakes include Lake Maharloo (a pink salt lake near Shiraz), Lake Bakhtegan, and Lake Tashk. The region also features numerous fertile plains, such as the Marvdasht Plain, which has supported intense agriculture since antiquity.
Natural resources in Fars are abundant, including significant reserves of natural gas and oil, alongside limestone, copper, and marble. The province's physical geography creates a stunningly diverse environment, transitioning from snow-capped peaks in the north to arid, desert-like conditions as one moves toward the southern border with Hormozgan Province.
