Shiraz is governed by the Shiraz Municipality, which is headed by a Mayor. The Mayor is not directly elected by the public, but rather selected by the Islamic City Council of Shiraz, whose members are elected by the city's residents in general elections.
The municipality is divided into 11 administrative districts (Mantaqeh), each responsible for local public services, urban planning execution, and community maintenance. As the capital of Fars Province, Shiraz also hosts the provincial governor's office (Ostandari) and various regional ministries, representing the authority of the central Iranian government in the south.
