Topography

Indonesia's topography is incredibly diverse, ranging from deep oceanic trenches to towering, snow-capped peaks. Coastal areas are generally characterized by extensive plains and mangrove swamps, particularly on the eastern coasts of Sumatra and the southern coasts of Papua.

Inland, the terrain quickly turns rugged and mountainous. A spine of volcanic mountains runs through Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara. The country boasts over 130 active volcanoes, including the famous Mount Bromo, Mount Merapi, and Krakatoa. The highest point in Indonesia—and Oceania—is Puncak Jaya (also known as Carstensz Pyramid) in the Sudirman Range of Papua, reaching a height of 4,884 meters (16,024 ft). Conversely, the lowest points sit at sea level along the country's massive 54,000+ kilometer coastline.
