Population

With a population exceeding 275 million, Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous nation. The demographic profile is notably youthful, providing the country with a significant "demographic dividend" and a robust, growing workforce. Despite its immense size, population distribution is highly uneven; the island of Java accounts for roughly 7% of the total land area but is home to more than half of the country's population, making it one of the most densely populated islands on Earth.

Indonesia is incredibly ethnically diverse, hosting over 1,300 recognized ethnic groups. The Javanese are the largest, comprising over 40% of the population, followed by the Sundanese, Batak, Madurese, and Minangkabau. The country is the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation (approx. 87%), but it officially recognizes six religions, including Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism (predominant in Bali), Buddhism, and Confucianism. While there are hundreds of indigenous languages, *Bahasa Indonesia* (Indonesian) is universally taught and spoken, serving as the crucial unifying lingua franca.
