Government

Indonesia is a unitary presidential constitutional republic. The President of Indonesia serves as both the head of state and the head of government, as well as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Presidents and Vice Presidents are elected directly by the people for five-year terms, with a limit of two consecutive terms.

The national legislature is the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), a bicameral body consisting of the People's Representative Council (DPR), which acts as the main legislative house, and the Regional Representative Council (DPD), which addresses regional issues. Since the fall of the New Order in 1998, Indonesia has undergone a massive decentralization program known as *Otonomi Daerah*, delegating substantial administrative and financial authority to its 38 provinces and hundreds of regencies (kabupaten) and cities (kota), allowing for highly localized governance.
