While not a traditional regional economy, the "monument economy" is one of the most critical drivers of India's tourism and service sectors. India's heritage sites generate substantial direct revenue for the government through ticketing, film licensing, and international tourism fees.
More broadly, the presence of prominent monuments stimulates entire local economies by creating massive, sustained demand for hospitality, local transport, tour guides, and culinary services. The Taj Mahal, for instance, frequently generates tens of millions of rupees annually in ticket sales alone, while supporting thousands of regional jobs. The continuous need for the conservation of these sites also provides highly specialized employment and funding for architects, historians, engineers, and traditional artisans.
