The topography of Thrissur city is relatively flat and gently undulating, with an average elevation of less than 3 meters (10 feet) above sea level. The urban core centers around a small but significant hillock, upon which the Vadakkumnathan Temple and Thekkinkadu Maidan are situated.
To the immediate west of the city, the land dips into the vast, low-lying Kole wetlands, which remain submerged for a significant portion of the year during the monsoon season. Toward the eastern boundaries of the district, the topography climbs dramatically into the rugged, densely forested peaks of the Western Ghats, forming a natural border with the state of Tamil Nadu. The city itself is completely landlocked, though coastal beaches lie just 25 kilometers to the west.
