Thrissur is located in the central part of Kerala, serving as a geographic bridge between the northern and southern halves of the state. The city is situated on a relatively flat coastal plain, gently rising toward the foothills of the Western Ghats to the east, while tapering off into a sprawling network of wetlands and backwaters toward the Arabian Sea in the west.
The defining geographic and cultural feature of the city is the Thekkinkadu Maidan, a large elevated open space in the geographic center of the city. Encircling this maidan is the Swaraj Round, the arterial road that dictates the city's radial street pattern.
Just outside the urban core lie the Thrissur Kole Wetlands, an internationally recognized Ramsar site. These lush wetlands serve not only as a crucial habitat for migratory birds but also as a highly productive agricultural zone. The rich alluvial soil and tropical climate make the surrounding district deeply fertile, supporting thick groves of coconut palms, rubber plantations, and spice gardens.
