Agriculture

While Thrissur city itself is highly urbanized, it serves as the commercial nexus for the agricultural bounty of the wider district. Just beyond the city limits lie the Thrissur Kole Wetlands, one of the most highly productive rice-growing areas in Kerala, affectionately known as the state's secondary rice bowl.

The surrounding hinterlands are heavily cultivated with cash crops, predominantly coconut, rubber, arecanut, and spices such as pepper, nutmeg, and cardamom. Banana and plantain cultivation is also ubiquitous.

In recent years, there has been a strong push toward organic farming and sustainable agriculture in the rural wards surrounding the city. The presence of the Kerala Agricultural University (headquartered in nearby Vellanikkara) heavily influences local farming practices, introducing advanced agricultural research, modern pest management, and innovative agro-tech directly to the local farmers.
