Historically, Kakkanad was an agrarian community with vast tracts of paddy fields, coconut groves, and rubber plantations. However, rapid urbanization and the IT boom have largely displaced traditional agriculture.
Today, commercial agriculture is nearly non-existent within the urban core. What remains is primarily small-scale homestead farming, where residents cultivate coconuts, bananas, tapioca, and vegetables in their backyards. There is also a growing interest in organic terrace farming and urban gardening among the residential communities, supported by state agricultural initiatives.
