Chhattisgarh operates under a parliamentary system of representative democracy, consistent with other Indian states. The executive branch is led by a Governor (appointed by the President of India) and a Chief Minister, who is the elected head of the state government and holds primary executive authority.
The state has a unicameral legislature—the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha)—consisting of 90 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). At the national level, Chhattisgarh is represented by 11 members in the Lok Sabha (Lower House) and 5 members in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) of the Indian Parliament. Administratively, the state is divided into 33 districts, grouped into five divisions.
