India's history is among the oldest in the world, with early human activity tracing back to the Stone Age. The sophisticated Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished around 2500 BCE, represents one of the world's earliest urban societies. This was followed by the Vedic period, which laid the foundations of Hinduism and early philosophical thought. Over the millennia, India saw the rise and fall of several great empires, including the Maurya and Gupta empires, the latter often described as the "Golden Age of India" for its advancements in science, mathematics, astronomy, religion, and philosophy.
Beginning in the medieval period, Islamic influence shaped the subcontinent, culminating in the magnificent Mughal Empire, which left an indelible mark on Indian art, architecture, and culture. In the 18th century, the British East India Company gradually established control, leading to direct British Crown rule (the British Raj) from 1858. The struggle for independence, famously championed by Mahatma Gandhi through non-violent resistance, unified the nation and culminated in independence on August 15, 1947.
Post-independence, India was partitioned into the dominions of India and Pakistan, a traumatic event resulting in massive migration and loss of life. In 1950, India became a republic with a visionary constitution. The late 20th century saw India transition from a state-controlled economy to a market-based one following sweeping economic liberalization in 1991. Today, India is a modern economic powerhouse, continuing to evolve while retaining its deep-rooted cultural heritage.
