Weather & climate

Kerala features a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen Am and Aw), characterized by heavy rainfall and high humidity year-round. Average temperatures typically range from 27°C to 32°C (80°F to 90°F) in the plains, while the hill stations in the Western Ghats experience much cooler climates, often dropping below 10°C (50°F) in winter.

The state is heavily dependent on two monsoon seasons: the Southwest Monsoon, which usually arrives in early June and brings torrential rain until September, and the Northeast Monsoon (retreating monsoon) in October and November. Kerala receives an average annual rainfall of nearly 2,900 mm (114 inches). Because of its topography and heavy rains, the state is susceptible to seasonal flooding and landslides, most notably the devastating floods of 2018. The best time to visit is generally considered to be from September to March, when the weather is relatively cooler and drier.
