Economy

Hesse is an economic powerhouse. If it were an independent country, its GDP (surpassing €320 billion) would rank among the top global economies. The state has one of the highest GDPs per capita in Germany, driven largely by the extraordinary economic output of the Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region.

Frankfurt is the undisputed financial capital of mainland Europe. It hosts the European Central Bank (ECB), making it the center of monetary policy for the Eurozone, as well as the German Bundesbank and hundreds of commercial banks. Beyond finance, Hesse benefits from excellent infrastructure, a highly skilled workforce, and an incredibly diverse economic base. The unemployment rate generally tracks slightly below the national German average, and the state attracts massive foreign direct investment due to its central European location and business-friendly ecosystem.
